Commerce migration

Wix → Shopify

Move Wix products, customers, and fulfilled orders into Shopify with remapped CSVs or the Store Migration app, without treating the product export as a complete store, theme, review, or blog cutover.

Before you migrate

Should you make this move?

Both platforms have a case. Compare what you gain with what you give up before scheduling the cutover.

Current platform

Wix

Reasons to stay
  • An approachable all-in-one builder offers broad small-business functionality
  • Editors get a purpose-built publishing workflow instead of raw files
Reasons to leave
  • Template lock-in, generated structure, and limited portability restrict advanced work
  • Themes, extensions, and content models add maintenance and portability constraints
New platform

Shopify

What gets better
  • A polished hosted commerce platform has an unmatched app and partner ecosystem
  • Core catalog, order, customer, and promotion workflows are integrated
What gets worse
  • Transaction economics, app dependency, and checkout constraints reduce control
  • Deep customization usually increases extension, agency, or engineering costs
Best of the move

Shopify: A polished hosted commerce platform has an unmatched app and partner ecosystem. This removes a major source-side concern: Template lock-in, generated structure, and limited portability restrict advanced work.

Worst of the move

What you lose: An approachable all-in-one builder offers broad small-business functionality. What you inherit: Transaction economics, app dependency, and checkout constraints reduce control.

This timeline assumes

  • Up to 5,000 product CSV rows per file, 50,000 contacts, and fulfilled order history
  • The team chooses Shopify's Store Migration app or a remapped product CSV before any catalog write.
  • Wix stays live through at least one refund, fulfillment, and payout cycle on Shopify.
  • A private Shopify store runs test orders before DNS changes.
  • The migration team records evidence for every blocking verification check.

ItemOutcomeImpactWhat happensMitigation
Product CSV, options, and the Store Migration apppartialcriticalWix exports physical products as a CSV, 5,000 rows per file. Digital products do not export. Shopify's Store Migration app can load that file without edits, then drops a product with four or more options to a single product with no variants, because Shopify allows three options. The manual path needs Wix columns renamed to Shopify's template: handleId to URL handle, name to Title, productImageUrl to Product image URL, brand to Vendor, visible TRUE/FALSE to true/false. Weight becomes grams. Inventory words like InStock become a number. Variant price is the product price plus surcharge.Count options before export. Split files over 5,000 rows. Recreate four-option products by hand or with metafields. Preview the import and keep products unpublished.
Product images, collections, and extra copypartialcriticalWix joins image URLs with semicolons. Shopify wants one image URL per row with the same handle, and it downloads those URLs during import, so you must import before you close Wix. A product CSV can put a product in one collection. Extra collections, ribbons, and additionalInfo blocks need a later pass. Shopify says to fold extra info into Description and to drop ribbon columns.Split image URLs onto their own rows. Keep Wix online until images land. Add leftover collections after import.
Variants and unpublished productspartialcriticalWix uses a Product row plus Variant rows. Shopify wants every row to be a variant. Shopify drops a product when a variant option is missing. Hidden Wix products stay unpublished until you make them available. Leave Publish new products to all sales channels unchecked, or hidden products go live on POS and Shop.Merge each Product row with its first Variant row. Fill every Option name and value. Deselect publish-to-all-channels. Open each failed row from the confirmation email.
Customers and addressespartialcriticalOnly the Wix site owner can export contacts, up to 50,000 at a time, as a regular CSV. Shopify has no column mapping on customer import, so headings must already match its template. Country must be an ISO code. Wix contacts can have more than one email, phone, or address. Shopify wants the first of each type.Have the site owner export Regular CSV. Rebuild the file on the Shopify customer template. Add country codes. Archive extra addresses.
Customer passwords and accountslostcriticalNeither vendor documents a password transfer. Buyers need a fresh Shopify account activation.Send activation after catalog and order history are trusted. Never promise the old password will work.
ReviewslosthighShopify says you cannot export or migrate reviews from Wix. It points to apps such as Judge.me, Loox, and Yotpo for a manual import.Export review text from the live product pages if you still have it. Load a sample through the chosen app before cutover.
Order historypartialcriticalWix can download an order CSV. Times are in UTC. Shopify's Wix guide tells you to use a third-party app such as Cart2Cart, LitExtension, or EZ Importer. Those imported orders are history, not live payment records you can edit like native Shopify checkout.Reconcile order id, gross, tax, discount, refund, and net totals. Keep Wix for refunds that still sit on the old merchant account.
Theme, checkout, and page builderlostcriticalWix layouts and checkout do not become a Shopify theme. Shopify starts you on a default theme and asks you to customize or buy another.Rebuild approved templates. Compare desktop and mobile screenshots before you move the domain.
Blog posts and editorial URLslosthighShopify's Wix guide covers products, customers, orders, and reviews. It does not import Wix blog posts. Product URLs change from /product-page/slug to /products/slug.Copy posts you still want. Reload images. Add a redirect from every indexed Wix product-page URL to the matching Shopify product.
Shipping, taxes, and paymentsmanualcriticalShopify asks you to rebuild shipping zones, rates, tax rules, and a payment provider, then place test orders. Digital products need shipping turned off.Configure zones and Shopify Payments or a supported third party. Run a successful charge, a failed charge, a refund, and a fulfillment on the preview store.
Domains, SSL, and URL structuremanualcriticalShopify warns that page paths change, so old shipping-policy style URLs 404 unless you add redirects first. Disconnect the domain from Wix before you point DNS, or SSL can fail.Inventory every indexed URL. Create redirects on Shopify. Lower TTL, then switch DNS only after test orders pass.

Backup procedure

Create the source-of-truth backup

Preserve Wix catalog, customers, orders, media, and routes before any Shopify write.

  1. Export WixProductDownload.csv in batches of 5,000 rows, a Regular customer CSV, and a fulfilled-order CSV.
  2. Download original product and blog images from the live site. Capture featured image URLs.
  3. Crawl public URLs, including every /product-page/ path.
  4. Record shipping, tax, payment, and domain settings. Hash every export.

Proof to capture: A signed manifest reconciles every scoped product, customer, order class, image set, and hash.

Transformation · Shopify Store Migration app, or Google Sheets on the Shopify sample files

Shopify CSV reshape or Store Migration app

Load Wix products without a four-option collapse or a hidden product going live.

  1. Choose the app path for unedited Wix CSVs, or rename columns and convert weight for a native import.
  2. Split files over 5,000 rows or 15 MB. Recreate products with four or more options.
  3. Rebuild the customer file with Shopify headings and country codes.

Proof to capture: Save the input, output, command or tool settings, warnings, and final item counts.

Transformation · Shopify product and customer importers, plus an order migration app

Catalog, history, and storefront rebuild

Load products first, then customers and orders, then theme and redirects.

  1. Import products unpublished and confirm images downloaded from Wix.
  2. Load a customer sample, then fulfilled orders through the chosen app.
  3. Rebuild checkout, shipping, and one-hop redirects from /product-page/ to /products/ before DNS.

Proof to capture: Save the input, output, command or tool settings, warnings, and final item counts.

05Handle with care

The things most likely to hurt.

These are operating limits. Treat every “Stop if” condition as a blocked migration, not a suggestion.

Import

A four-option product loses every variant

criticalpossible likelihood

Shopify's Store Migration app imports a Wix product with four or more options as one product with no variants.

Consequence
Buyers see one SKU where Wix had a full option matrix.
Mitigation
Inventory option counts first. Recreate those products by hand before you publish.

Stop if: Any in-scope SKU is missing an option the Wix CSV still lists.

Domain

Old URLs 404 after the domain move

criticallikely likelihood

Wix product pages use /product-page/slug. Shopify uses /products/slug. Leaving the domain on Wix can also break SSL.

Consequence
Paid ads and bookmarks die, and checkout can show a certificate error.
Mitigation
Create redirects first. Disconnect the domain on Wix, then point DNS.

Stop if: An indexed URL 404s or TLS fails after the switch.

Cutover

Both stores keep taking payment

criticalpossible likelihood

Wix checkout stays live after Shopify starts charging cards.

Consequence
Orders and stock split across two merchants.
Mitigation
Freeze Wix checkout, then switch DNS. Keep Wix readable for refunds.

Stop if: A new paid order appears on Wix after freeze.

07The point of change

Cut over with a way back.

Go live

Cutover

Make Shopify the only checkout without losing the final Wix delta.

Recommended window: A low-volume weekday morning with store, finance, DNS, and support owners available.

  1. Freeze Wix checkout and new product edits.
  2. Export and import the final product, customer, and order delta.
  3. Disconnect the domain on Wix, then point DNS to Shopify.
  4. Run every blocking check and keep Wix readable.
  5. Keep the source intact through the rollback window.

Proof to capture: Shopify owns checkout, totals reconcile, and every blocking check has evidence.

Return to safety

Rollback

Return checkout to Wix without losing Shopify-era orders.

Deadline: Within seven days and before Wix plans, credentials, domains, or payout settings are changed.

  1. Stop new Shopify checkout and paid ads that hit the new store.
  2. Restore the prior Wix DNS records and storefront.
  3. Export Shopify orders placed after cutover.
  4. Fulfill or refund those orders on the restored merchant account as finance directs.
  5. Run the same blocking checks against Wix.

Proof to capture: Wix again owns checkout with current stock and no duplicate Shopify charge.

Rollback immediately when
  • Unexplained SKU, price, or inventory variance
  • Missing or exposed customer data
  • Duplicate charge or split-brain checkout
  • Failed DNS, TLS, or payment check
  • A critical selling path has no safe Shopify replacement

09Post-migration cleanup

Remove the scaffolding safely.

Safe after: One complete refund, fulfillment, and payout cycle, at least seven stable days, and owner sign-off on every blocking check.

  1. Archive Wix exports, maps, and verification evidence.
  2. Revoke migration app tokens and unused staff accounts.
  3. Remove obsolete Wix checkout, domains, and payment methods.
  4. Keep Wix read-only through the approved retention window.
  5. Cancel paid Wix plans only after billing, legal, and recovery review.
  6. Schedule the next Shopify backup, access, and playbook review.
10Experiences from the field

When the plan met reality.

First-hand accounts are preferred. Vendor case studies are labeled, and every note below is an editorial paraphrase—follow the link for the full context.

First-person accountSophie Arnott · Jewellers Academy

Building an effective website for selling jewelleryUndated

Sophie Arnott of Anvil & Ivy told Jewellers Academy that her first site was on Wix and that she later moved the shop to Shopify. Wix was fine as a beginner start. Shopify was the store she wanted for ecommerce features and analytics. A web designer handled the rebrand and the bare bones. She then added the catalogue herself and says that took a while to look right. She now edits the Shopify site without a developer. The interview is about selling jewellery online after a lockdown rebrand. It does not describe CSV column mapping, the Store Migration app, or order-history apps.

What they recommend
  • Budget time to add the catalogue by hand if you are not using Shopify's Wix CSV path. Arnott says getting products looking right took a while.
  • Decide whether a designer builds the first theme. She kept later edits in-house after the bones were in place.
Worth noticing
  • The move is told as a store-operations choice, not as a documented importer run.
  • A first Wix site can stay in the story as a beginner tool while Shopify becomes the selling site.
Vendor case studyStem & Leaf

Creating a Shopify store for Sow CoffeeUndated

Stem & Leaf, an Australian studio, published a Sow Coffee Project case study dated July 2023. Charlie started on Wix as a coffee blog in 2019, then added a store. Rising Wix costs and a growing wholesale and retail business were the reasons given for leaving. The studio says it mapped Wix CSV columns to Shopify, imported products, recreated blog posts, added alt text, set redirects, and changed DNS. Founding director Wade Ruiters is quoted saying Kathryn migrated pages, products, and blog posts with no downtime. Stem & Leaf writes that the site was unreachable for minutes to an hour during DNS, and that the first week saw a record number of orders after their email and social work. This is a vendor portfolio page, not an independent import study.

What they recommend
  • If the Wix site began as a blog, treat posts as a rebuild. Stem & Leaf recreated them instead of expecting a blog export.
  • Treat the minutes-to-an-hour DNS window and the first-week order claim as the studio's published result, then run your own cutover plan.
Worth noticing
  • The partner path included CSV transforms, redirects, and a blog rewrite, not only Shopify's Store Migration app.
  • Cost and store growth were the stated reasons to leave Wix, while the blog history still had to be copied.
