Notion → Google Docs
Notion's workspace export is HTML or Markdown and CSV, and the download link lasts 7 days. Google Drive's convert setting is documented for Word files, not for a Notion zip.
Should you make this move?
Both platforms have a case. Compare what you gain with what you give up before scheduling the cutover.
Notion
- Polished pages and databases let teams build flexible workspaces without code
- Flexible documents make it easy to capture and organize team knowledge
- Offline use, export fidelity, and large-workspace governance remain weak points
- Structure, links, permissions, and rich blocks often degrade during export
Google Docs
- Frictionless real-time editing and comments make collaborative writing universal
- Flexible documents make it easy to capture and organize team knowledge
- Large knowledge systems lack durable structure, backlinks, and local file ownership
- Structure, links, permissions, and rich blocks often degrade during export
Google Docs: Frictionless real-time editing and comments make collaborative writing universal. This removes a major source-side concern: Offline use, export fidelity, and large-workspace governance remain weak points.
What you lose: Polished pages and databases let teams build flexible workspaces without code. What you inherit: Large knowledge systems lack durable structure, backlinks, and local file ownership.

Know the shape of the move.
This timeline assumes
- You want pages as Google Docs and databases as spreadsheets. The site already documents Notion → Obsidian, Google Docs → Notion, and Airtable → Google Sheets.
- A workspace export is started from a desktop or the web. Notion says a phone cannot export the whole workspace.
- You can download the email link within 7 days. Notion says that link expires.
- Private pages of other people are missing unless an Enterprise admin has granted access through content search.
- Notion stays up until the Docs you care about exist. The export cannot be uploaded to recreate the workspace.
What survives the move.
“Partial” and “manual” are not footnotes. They are work that must be scheduled and verified.
| Item | Outcome | Impact | What happens | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Workspace export | partial | critical | Settings, then Workspace, then General, then Export all workspace content. Notion emails a link. The link expires after 7 days. The zip can be HTML, or Markdown and CSV. A sitemap index.html points at the exported pages. Uploaded files are included. | Download the zip the day it arrives and store it outside the inbox. |
| Pages you cannot see | lost | critical | Notion says pages the exporter cannot access are omitted, including other people's private pages. Enterprise workspace admins can grant access with content search so a later export includes them. Teamspace settings can also omit content. | Have each owner export their private pages, or use the Enterprise access step before the one export you will keep. |
| HTML pages | partial | high | A page export to HTML can include comments at page and block level, resolved and unresolved, plus files, pages, or users mentioned in them. Subpages become separate files in folders, with images beside them. | Use HTML if comments matter. Open a page and check that the comment text is in the file. |
| Markdown and CSV | partial | critical | A non-database page becomes Markdown. A full-page database becomes a CSV, with Markdown files for subpages. Callout blocks become HTML because Notion says Markdown has no equivalent. Notion says you open the CSV in a spreadsheet and the Markdown as plain text. | Do not expect a database to become a Doc. Send the CSV to Sheets. |
| PDF workspace export | lost | medium | Notion's backup note says the workspace PDF export is going away, rolled out through 31 August 2026. HTML, Markdown, and CSV remain. A single page can still be exported as PDF. | Do not build this move on a workspace PDF. |
| Turning files into Docs | manual | critical | Google Drive's convert setting is named Convert uploads to Google Docs editor format, under drive.google.com/drive/settings, and the help example is a Microsoft Word upload. Notion's export page does not produce Word files. Uploading the zip stores the zip. | Create a Doc per page you still need, from the HTML or Markdown you archived. Check headings after you paste. |
| Databases | manual | critical | The Markdown export's databases are CSV files. Google's import help says File, Import, Upload, then an import location and a separator. A file that is too large gets the message that it is too large to import directly, and that help points at Connected Sheets. | Import each CSV into Sheets. Relations and rollups are whatever text was in the CSV, not live Notion properties. |
| Same file name in Drive | partial | high | Drive says a second upload of the same name becomes a revision of the existing file unless you choose Keep both files. Creation time becomes the upload time. | Use a folder per export. Choose Keep both files if a name already exists. |
| Comments in the Doc | manual | medium | HTML can contain the comment text. Drive's convert setting is not documented as turning that HTML into Docs comments. A Doc copy can include comments only when you copy an existing Google file and check Copy comments and suggestions. | If you need comment text, keep the HTML. Do not expect Docs comment threads. |
| Permissions and sharing | lost | critical | The export is files. Notion guest access and page permissions are not Google Drive permissions. | Share each Doc or folder on purpose. Start from a private folder. |
| Recreating Notion | lost | high | Notion says you cannot recreate the workspace by uploading the export. Moving pages between Notion accounts is a different procedure, and Notion warns that duplicated pages sometimes have issues. | Keep the Notion workspace until the Docs are signed off. |
| Drafts on a phone | manual | low | A single page can be exported from mobile as Markdown and CSV, and Notion emails a link. The full workspace export is desktop or web only. | Run the workspace export from a computer. |
Where each thing goes.
| Source | Destination | Method | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Workspace | Zip of HTML or Markdown and CSV | manual | Email link expires in 7 days. |
| Page | HTML file or Markdown file | transform | Not a Google Doc until you create one. |
| Subpage | File in a folder | automatic | Included when Include subpages is on for a page export. |
| Comment | Text inside the HTML export | transform | Resolved and unresolved, if you chose HTML. Not a Docs comment thread. |
| Callout | HTML inside the Markdown export | transform | Notion says Markdown has no callout. |
| Full-page database | CSV, then a Sheet | transform | File, Import in Sheets. Not a Doc. |
| Uploaded file | File in the zip | automatic | Notion includes uploads in the workspace export. |
| Private page of someone else | No destination | unsupported | Omitted unless that person exports it, or Enterprise content search grants access. |
| Page permission | Drive sharing you set | manual | Nothing in the zip applies Notion's rules. |
| Workspace PDF | No destination | unsupported | Notion is removing that option through 31 August 2026. |
Make the move recoverable.
Create the source-of-truth backup
Store the zip before the link expires, and leave Notion online.
- List private pages that this login cannot see.
- Export HTML if you need comments, or Markdown and CSV if you need database files.
- Download the zip the day the email arrives.
- Copy it to a second disk.
- Leave the Notion workspace in place.
Proof to capture: The zip opens, index.html lists the pages you expected, and Notion still loads.
Archive
Get every page this account is allowed to export.
- Use a computer. Open Settings, Workspace, General, Export all workspace content.
- Pick HTML when comments matter.
- Download before 7 days.
- Ask other owners to export private pages the zip does not contain.
Proof to capture: Save the input, output, command or tool settings, warnings, and final item counts.
Docs and Sheets
Turn the archive into files people can edit in Google.
- Put the zip in Drive as the archive. Do not expect Convert uploads to turn the zip into Docs. That setting's documented example is Word.
- Create a Doc for each page you still edit, and check the headings.
- Import each database CSV with File, Import.
- Share the folder yourself.
Proof to capture: Save the input, output, command or tool settings, warnings, and final item counts.
The things most likely to hurt.
These are operating limits. Treat every “Stop if” condition as a blocked migration, not a suggestion.
The email link expires
The export finished and the zip is only in a week-old email.
- Consequence
- Notion says the link dies after 7 days. You export again, and private pages are still missing.
- Mitigation
- Download the same day.
Stop if: You do not have the zip on disk.
Private pages were never in the file
index.html looks complete and another person's private pages are simply absent.
- Consequence
- Those pages exist only in Notion.
- Mitigation
- Compare the zip with a page list from each owner.
Stop if: An owner has not confirmed their private pages.
A database was pasted into a Doc
The CSV was treated as a page.
- Consequence
- You get a document full of commas, and Sheets never received the table.
- Mitigation
- Import CSV files with File, Import.
Stop if: A database people filter every week has no Sheet.

Cutover
Give people Docs and Sheets for the pages they still edit, with Notion still online.
- Confirm the zip is downloaded.
- Create Docs from the pages that are still active.
- Import database CSVs into Sheets.
- Share a private folder, then widen it.
- Leave Notion in place.
Proof to capture: The active pages have Docs, the databases have Sheets, and Notion still opens.
Rollback
Keep working in Notion. The export cannot rebuild it.
- Tell people to edit Notion.
- Stop sharing the Drive folder if the Docs are misleading.
- Keep the zip.
- Note which page pasted badly.
- Export again if the link already died and the zip is incomplete.
Proof to capture: Notion is the place people edit, and the zip is still stored.
- The download link expired and there is no zip
- Private pages are missing
- A database never became a Sheet
- Drive sharing is wider than Notion was
- Someone tried to recreate Notion by uploading the zip
Prove the migration worked.
Every blocking check must pass. Capture the evidence before cleanup begins.
| Pass | ID | Check | Method | Expected result | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
V-01Blocking | Zip on disk | Open the file without the email link. | It unzips, and index.html is there. | Zip. | |
V-02Blocking | Private pages | Ask each owner to look for a page only they can see. | It is in their own export, or in this zip because access was granted. | Owner note. | |
V-03 | HTML | If you needed comments, open one HTML file that had a thread. | The comment text is in the file. | HTML sample. | |
V-04Blocking | Three pages | Compare a Doc with the Notion page. | The text you need is there. Headings that dropped are listed. | Page check. | |
V-05Blocking | CSV row count | Import a database and compare rows with Notion, minus the header. | The counts match, or the file was too large and you used the path Google names. | Row count. | |
V-06Blocking | Keep both files | Upload a second time only if you chose Keep both files. | You did not overwrite an earlier Doc as a new revision by accident. | Drive folder. | |
V-07Blocking | Folder access | Open the folder as someone who should not see a private page. | They cannot. | Share check. | |
V-08Blocking | Notion still up | Open the workspace. | It is still the editable copy. | Notion check. |
Remove the scaffolding safely.
Safe after: The Docs you will maintain have been edited once in Drive, and the zip is stored.
- Archive the zip outside email.
- Leave Notion until private pages are accounted for.
- Delete Docs that were only paste tests.
- Share databases from Sheets, not from a Doc full of CSV text.
- Do not plan a round trip. Notion says the export does not recreate the workspace.
